Study Abroad GuidanceTOEFL Exam Fee India 2026: Real Checkout Total
The verified amount on the ETS payment screen, every extra charge, and how to avoid paying more.
The TOEFL exam fee in India is listed at ₹15,729 on the official ETS India website. But that is not always the amount you pay.
Search for TOEFL fees in India, and you will find ₹15,254, ₹16,900, ₹18,000, $195, and $205. A parent budgets for one figure. Then the payment screen shows another.
We fixed that. Our team booked a real TOEFL iBT registration on the ETS India site and stopped at the payment screen. This guide shows you that number, every extra charge ETS can add, and simple ways to avoid paying more than you need to amount
Key Takeaways
- ETS India lists the TOEFL exam fee in India at ₹15,729.
- Old figures like ₹16,900, ₹18,000, and dollar prices are outdated.
- Extras add up fast: rescheduling, late booking, and score reports beyond four universities.
- Cancel at least 4 full days early to get 50% back.
- TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE cost about the same. Total cost depends on retakes and score sends.

Why Every Website Shows a Different TOEFL Fee
If you have seen five different numbers, you are not imagining it. There are three reasons.
Dollar Prices vs Rupee Prices
Many guides still quote the TOEFL fee in US dollars, from $173 to $205. That is out of date for India. ETS India now lists the fee in rupees, so a dollar figure only adds confusion. Ignore any guide that tells you the fee "changes with the exchange rate."
Old Numbers That Still Rank on Google
For a long time, the India fee set was ₹16,900 for registration and ₹5,900 for rescheduling. Pages written then still appear high on Google. Nobody went back to update them. If a guide quotes ₹16,900, check its date.
The GST Confusion on the ETS Page Itself
This is the part most guides miss. Look closely at the current ETS fee table:
- Rescheduling is listed at ₹5,000. Add 18% GST, and you get ₹5,900, the old price.
- Late registration is listed at ₹3,305.08. Add 18% GST, and you get ₹3,900, the old price.
- Score review is listed at ₹6,694.92. Add 18% GST, and you get ₹7,900, the old price.
Those odd decimals tell you the listed prices look like amounts before GST. Yet the footnote on the same page says fees include taxes.
So which is it? That is exactly why we checked the payment screen.
Every TOEFL Charge in India, Line by Line
The registration fee is only the start. These are the other charges ETS India lists, and when each one applies.
| Service | When it applies | ETS-listed price | If 18% GST is added | How to avoid it |
| Registration | Every test booking | ₹15,729 | ₹18,560.22 | Cannot avoid. Book once, be prepared. |
| Late registration | Booking after the regular deadline | ₹3,305.08 | ₹3,900 | Book at least 7 days before your test |
| Rescheduling | Changing your test date | ₹5,000 | ₹5,900 | Pick a date with a buffer |
| Additional score reports | More than 4 universities | ₹2,000 (marked "50%") | ₹2,360 | Finalise your university list early |
| Speaking or Writing score review | You want a section rescored | ₹6,694.92 | ₹7,900 | Use only if a score is clearly off |
| Reinstatement of cancelled scores | You cancelled scores on test day and want them back | ₹1,652.54 | ₹1,950 | Don't cancel scores in panic |
| Payment return | Your payment bounces or is reversed | ₹2,900 | Not confirmed | Use a card with enough limit |

Registration Fee
This is the core TOEFL iBT test fee. It covers the full test (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), your online score report, and score sends to up to four institutions. It costs the same whether you sit at a test centre or take the Home Edition.
Late Registration Fee
Regular online registration closes 7 full days before your test date, according to the ETS Bulletin. After that, you can still book until 2 days before, but you pay the late fee. That is ₹3,305.08 listed, or ₹3,900 if GST is added.
Example: Riya decides on a Friday that she wants a test the next Thursday. She pays the late fee. Had she booked one week earlier, she would have saved it.
Rescheduling Fee
You can move your test date through your ETS account. You must do it at least 4 full days before your test. The fee is ₹5,000.
Example: Arjun works in Bengaluru. A client deadline lands on his test week. He reschedules 6 days before and pays the fee. If he had waited until 3 days before, he could not reschedule at all.
Additional Score Reports
Your fee covers score sends to up to four universities. You must choose them by 10 PM (local test centre time) the day before your test. After that, every extra report costs ₹2,000 as currently listed. ETS shows "(50%)" next to this price.
Speaking or Writing Section Score Review
If you believe your Speaking or Writing score is wrong, you can request a review for ₹6,694.92 listed. Most students do not need this. Use it only when one section is far below your practice scores.
Reinstatement of Cancelled Scores
On test day, you can choose to cancel your scores. If you change your mind later, getting them back costs ₹1,652.54 listed. Our advice: don't cancel scores on impulse. You can simply choose not to send them.
Payment Return Fee
If your payment fails after booking, or a bank reverses it, ETS charges ₹2,900. This happens most often with cards that hit their limit or block the transaction.
What the TOEFL Fee Includes (and What It Doesn't)
Your TOEFL registration fee includes:
- 1.One full TOEFL iBT test (test centre or Home Edition)
- 2.Online score report in your ETS account
- 3.Free score reports to up to 4 universities, chosen before test day
- 4.Scores valid for 2 years
Your fee does not include:
- 1.Prep courses or practice tests
- 2.Score reports to a fifth university or more
- 3.Retakes (each one is a full new fee)
- 4.Travel to the test centre
- 5.A webcam, microphone, or quiet room for the Home Edition
Since January 2026, TOEFL iBT scores use a new 1 to 6 band scale aligned with the CEFR. The format changed, but the fee structure works the same way.

Payment Methods That Work in India
ETS lists these payment options for online registration: credit or debit card, electronic check (e-check), PayPal, and Alipay.
Most Indian students use a credit or debit card.
Paying With a Parent's Card
You can usually pay with a parent's card. The card does not need to be in the student's name. Parents should:
- Pay only on the official ets.org website, never through a link sent on WhatsApp or SMS
- Keep the OTP and payment confirmation email
- Check that the bank statement matches the checkout amount
Why Indian Cards Get Declined
Card payments to ETS sometimes fail. The usual causes are simple:
- Online or international transactions are switched off. Turn them on in your banking app before paying.
- The card limit is too low. Check your daily online limit.
- The OTP timed out. Keep your phone nearby and pay in one go.
A failed payment that bounces after booking can cost ₹2,900. Fix these settings first.
Refunds, Cancellations and Rescheduling: What You Lose
Changing plans with TOEFL costs money. Timing decides how much.
| Your action | Timing | What happens |
| Cancel your test | 4 or more full days before | You get 50% of the test fee back |
| Cancel your test | Less than 4 full days before | No refund |
| Reschedule | 4 or more full days before | Pay the rescheduling fee |
| Reschedule | Less than 4 full days before | Not allowed |
| Miss your test | Test day | No refund |
| ETS cancels your test | Any time | Full refund, or reschedule for free |
Source: ETS refund and cancellation policy and TOEFL iBT Bulletin. Confirm on the ETS India site before acting.
How to count 4 full days: If your test is on Saturday, your last day to cancel or reschedule is Tuesday.
Our advice: If you might need to move your date, decide early. Rescheduling (₹5,000 listed) costs far less than losing half your fee.
The Real Total: Budgeting for One Attempt vs a Retake
Most students only budget for the registration fee. Here is what TOEFL can really cost, using ETS-listed prices. The last column shows totals if 18% GST is added.
| Cost item | Scenario 1: One attempt, 4 universities | Scenario 2: One attempt, 10 universities | Scenario 3: Retake plus one reschedule |
| Registration | ₹15,729 | ₹15,729 | ₹31,458 (2 tests) |
| Extra score reports | ₹0 | ₹12,000 (6 × ₹2,000) | ₹0 |
| Rescheduling | ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹5,000 |
| Total (ETS-listed) | ₹15,729 | ₹27,729 | ₹36,458 |
| Total if 18% GST is added | ₹18,560 | ₹32,720 | ₹43,020 |
Scenario 1: One Attempt, Four Universities
This is the best case. You score what you need on the first try, and you apply to four universities or fewer. You pay only the registration fee.
Scenario 2: One Attempt, Ten Universities
Most Indian students apply to 8 to 10 universities. Six extra score reports add ₹12,000 at the listed price. That is almost the cost of a second test.
Tip: Shortlist your universities before test day. Use all four free slots on your top choices.
Scenario 3: One Retake Plus a Reschedule
This is the realistic worst case. One reschedule and one retake push your TOEFL cost past the ₹36,000 listed. Keep a retake reserve in your budget, especially if your application deadline is close.
Is TOEFL Cheaper Than IELTS or PTE?
All three tests cost roughly the same in India. The real difference comes from extras, retakes, and which tests your universities accept.
| Test | Official fee in India (2026) | Free score sends | Score validity | Source |
| TOEFL iBT | ₹15,729 listed at checkout | Up to 4 universities | 2 years | ETS India |
| IELTS Academic | ₹19,000 (from 1 April 2026) | Varies by test centre | 2 years (most universities) | IDP India |
| PTE Academic | ₹18,900 incl. GST (from 16 March 2026) | Send to any number of institutions | 2 years (most universities) | Pearson PTE |
When TOEFL Is the Smarter Spend
TOEFL makes sense when:
- Your universities are mostly in the USA, where TOEFL is widely accepted
- You apply to four universities or fewer, so the free reports cover you
- You already score well on computer-based tests
When Another Test Saves You Money
Another test may cost less overall if:
- Your country list includes destinations where some universities or visa routes prefer IELTS
- You apply to many universities and want unlimited score sends (PTE)
- You need a test for a specific visa category. Check the visa rules for your country first.
Not sure which test fits your country list? Our IELTS guidance page explains the IELTS route, and an Aliff counsellor can compare all three for your applications.
TOEFL Fee Myths Indian Students Still Believe
You Can Pay the TOEFL Fee With UPI
Verdict: ETS India lists cards, e-check, PayPal, and Alipay for online registration.
Indian Students Can Get 50% Off Through the ETS Fee Reduction Service
Verdict: False for most Indian students. ETS designed its Fee Reduction Service for high school seniors in the United States with financial need. It is not a general discount for students in India.
The TOEFL Fee Is ₹18,000 Flat
Verdict: Outdated. The ₹18,000 figure came from an older base price of ₹15,254 plus GST. ETS India now lists ₹15,729.
The Fee Is in Dollars, So It Changes Every Day
Verdict: False. ETS India lists the TOEFL fee in rupees. The price changes only when ETS updates it.
How to Avoid Paying More Than You Need To
Most extra TOEFL costs are avoidable. Follow these five rules.
- 1.Book at least 7 days ahead. This avoids the late registration fee.
- 2.Choose your four universities before test day. Free sends only work if you use them.
- 3.Take a full mock test before you pay. A retake is the single biggest extra cost.
- 4.Leave a buffer before your application deadline. You'll need it if you must reschedule or retake.
- 5.Pay only on ets.org. Never pay through an agent link, WhatsApp message, or unofficial site.
Is the TOEFL Fee Worth It? A Quick Decision Checklist
Answer these five questions before you pay.
- 1.Do your target universities accept TOEFL? (Check each university's admissions page.)
- 2.Does your destination country's visa process accept TOEFL for your visa type?
- 3.Have you scored near your target on a full practice test?
- 4.Is your earliest application deadline at least 6 to 8 weeks away, leaving room for a retake?
- 5.Can your budget cover Scenario 2 (more score reports) if needed?
Five yes answers: Book TOEFL with confidence.
One or two no answers: Fix those first. The fee is easier to waste than to recover.
Three or more no answers: Talk to a counsellor before you pay. Another test may suit you better.
Final Recommendation
The TOEFL exam fee you see listed is not always the amount you pay. Check the checkout screen, book at least a week early, use your four free score reports wisely, and keep a retake reserve. Do that, and you will pay for TOEFL once, at the price you planned for. Before paying for any English test, confirm two things: that your universities accept it, and that you are ready to score your target on the first try. A wasted test costs more than any fee difference between TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE.

ETS India lists the registration fee at ₹15,729. Always budget for the checkout amount, not the list price.
TS India lists credit and debit cards, e-check, PayPal, and Alipay for online registration. A credit or debit card with online transactions switched on is the safest option.
Yes, slightly. TOEFL is listed at ₹15,729, while IELTS costs ₹19,000 through IDP India from April 2026. But retakes and extra score reports can erase that gap, so compare total costs, not just the test fee.
Your fee covers up to four universities, chosen by 10 PM the day before your test. After that, each extra report is listed at ₹2,000. Sending scores to ten universities adds about ₹12,000.
You get 50% of your test fee back if you cancel at least 4 full days before your test date. Cancel later than that, and you get nothing. If ETS cancels your test, you get a full refund or a free reschedule.
