TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026: New Format, Sections, Timing

Everything that changed on 21 January 2026, verified against ETS, so you prepare for the test you'll actually take.

The TOEFL you will sit in 2026 is not the TOEFL most prep books describe.

On 21 January 2026, ETS rolled out a new TOEFL exam pattern. The test is now adaptive. Every section has new task types. Scores now run from 1 to 6 instead of 0 to 120.

Yet many websites still show the old format. Some list a 3-hour test. Some say Speaking happens face to face with an examiner. Some say the 0-120 scale is staying. None of that is true for the current test.

This guide gives you the verified TOEFL exam pattern for 2026, section by section. You'll also learn how the new score works, what it means for your university and visa plans, and how to prepare without wasting weeks on old material.

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026 at a Glance

The TOEFL exam pattern for 2026 has four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The test is adaptive, so questions adjust to your level. The base testing time is about 90 minutes, but ETS asks you to allow around 2 hours. Each section and the overall score are reported on a 1-6 scale.

You can take the test on a computer at an authorised test centre, or at home through the TOEFL iBT Home Edition with a live online proctor. The format is the same for both.

What Changed in the TOEFL on 21 January 2026?

Four big things changed. The test became adaptive. Old task types were replaced. Section times shifted. The score scale moved from 0-120 to 1-6.

If you studied for TOEFL before 2026, or you have an older sibling's prep book, this is the section to read twice.

Old TOEFL vs New TOEFL: Side-by-Side Comparison

SectionOld TOEFL (before 21 Jan 2026)New TOEFL (from 21 Jan 2026)
ReadingLong academic passages, about 35 min, scored 0-30Three shorter task types, about 30 min, scored 1-6
ListeningLectures and campus conversations, about 36 min, scored 0-30Four task types including short responses and announcements, about 29 min, scored 1-6
WritingIntegrated Writing and Academic Discussion, about 29 min, scored 0-30Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion, about 23 min, scored 1-6
SpeakingFour tasks, three of them integrated, about 16 min, scored 0-30Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview, about 8 min, scored 1-6
Test designFixed (same difficulty for everyone)Adaptive (adjusts to your level)
Overall score0-1201-6, plus a comparable 0-120 score until early 2028

The biggest practical shift is in Speaking and Writing. The old integrated tasks, where you read, listened, and then spoke or wrote about both, are gone. In their place are shorter, everyday tasks like writing an email or answering interview questions.

What Does "Adaptive" Mean in the New TOEFL?

An adaptive test changes difficulty based on how you perform.

Think of a cricket coach in the nets. If you play the first few balls well, the bowler speeds up. If you struggle, the pace drops so the coach can see your real level. The new TOEFL works in a similar way.

This is why ETS says test time and the number of items can vary. Two students sitting the same test may see slightly different questions.

What this means for you: Accuracy in the early part of a section matters. Rushing the first questions to "save time" can work against you.

Why ETS Changed the Test

ETS says the update reflects how students actually use English in modern study and work. Emails to professors, quick replies in class, and short campus announcements are now part of the test. The new scale also lines up directly with CEFR, the global framework many universities and governments already use.

TOEFL Sections 2026: A Section-by-Section Breakdown

This is the TOEFL syllabus 2026 in practice. For each task, you'll see what it tests and one tip to start preparing.

Reading Section (about 30 minutes, 50 items)

Complete the Words

You see a short text with letters missing from some words. You type the missing letters.

This tests vocabulary and grammar together. You need to know the word and its correct form.

Tip: Read the full sentence before filling a gap. The grammar around the word often tells you the ending.

Read in Daily Life

You read short, real-world texts. Think of a campus notice, a menu, an email or a timetable. Then you answer questions about them.

Tip: Practise reading for specific details, such as dates, times, and who needs to do what.

Read an Academic Passage

You read a short academic text and answer questions. This is the task closest to the old TOEFL Reading.

Tip: Practise with short science, history and social science passages. Focus on main ideas and how sentences connect.

Listening Section (about 29 minutes, 47 items)

Listen and Choose a Response

You hear a short statement or question. You pick the most natural reply.

Tip: Listen for tone. A question said with surprise often needs a different reply from a neutral one.

Listen to a Conversation

You hear a short conversation, often on campus, and answer questions about it.

Listen to an Announcement

You hear an announcement, such as a change to a class schedule, and answer questions.

Tip for both: Note who is speaking, what changed, and what action is needed.

Listen to an Academic Talk

You hear a short talk on an academic topic and answer questions. It is shorter than the old TOEFL lectures.

Tip: Practise with short lectures and podcasts. Write two or three key words, not full sentences.

Writing Section (about 23 minutes, 12 items)

Build a Sentence

You arrange words or phrases to form a correct sentence. This tests grammar and word order.

Write an Email

You write a short email for a real situation. For example, you might ask a professor for a deadline extension.

This task matters for Indian students. Many students write in a very formal or very casual style. The right email is polite, clear, and short.

Tip: Use a simple structure. Greeting, purpose in one line, details, a clear request, and a polite close.

Write for an Academic Discussion

You read a professor's question and posts from other students. Then you add your own view with a reason.

Tip: State your position in your first sentence. Then give one clear reason and one example.

Speaking Section (about 8 minutes, 11 items)

Listen and Repeat

You hear a sentence and repeat it as accurately as you can. This tests pronunciation, rhythm, and listening.

Take an Interview

You answer interview-style questions about yourself, your studies, or your opinions.

Important: Speaking in the TOEFL is recorded on the computer. There is no face-to-face examiner. If a website tells you otherwise, it is describing a different test.

Tip: Record yourself on your phone and play it back. Most students notice their own fillers and pauses right away.

How Long Is the New TOEFL Exam?

The new TOEFL takes about 90 minutes of testing time across four sections. Directions and check-in add more time, so ETS advises allowing around 2 hours in total. Because the test is adaptive, your exact time and number of questions may vary slightly.

SectionApprox. Base Time
Reading30 min
Listening29 min
Writing23 min
Speaking8 min
Total testing timeabout 90 min
Plan for (with directions)about 2 hours

Test-day plan: Arrive early at your centre, or log in early for the Home Edition. Keep your passport ready. Then budget roughly two hours from the start of the test.

New TOEFL Score Scale: How the 1-6 Bands Work

From 21 January 2026, you get four section scores and one overall score, all on a 1-6 scale in half-band steps (1, 1.5, 2, and so on up to 6).

For the first two years, your score report also shows your CEFR level and a comparable overall score on the old 0-120 scale. This helps universities that still publish 0-120 requirements.

How Your Overall TOEFL Score Is Calculated

Your overall score is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.

ETS gives this example: an average of 5.125 becomes an overall score of 5. An average of 5.25 becomes 5.5.

StudentReadingListeningWritingSpeakingAverageOverall
A554.54.54.755
B44.543.54.04
C5.55555.1255

Look at Student A. Two sections at 4.5 still produce an overall 5. But if a university also sets a minimum per section, those 4.5 scores could still cause a problem. Always check both numbers.

How the 1-6 Scale Maps to CEFR Levels

The new scale lines up with CEFR in every section. A score of 4 means CEFR B2 (upper intermediate) in Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking alike. A score of 5 means C1 (advanced).

This is simpler than before. On the old scale, B2 needed different minimums in each section, such as 18 in Reading but 20 in Speaking.

For the full band-to-CEFR table, use the official ETS score comparison page. Avoid third-party charts. Several of them do not match ETS.

The 0-120 Transition Period Explained

For two years after January 2026, ETS shows a comparable 0-120 overall score on every report. This is a bridge while universities update their requirements.

ETS also says a band score of 5 should work well for institutions that previously asked for 100 out of 120. Use the ETS concordance table for any other number.

Is 4.5 a Good TOEFL Score?

A 4.5 sits between B2 and C1. Whether it is "good" depends on where you apply.

Here is how to check in three steps:

  1. 1.Find your university's TOEFL requirement on its official admissions page.
  2. 2.If it lists only a 0-120 score, convert it using the ETS concordance table.
  3. 3.Check if the university also sets minimum section scores.

As a rough guide from ETS, universities that used to ask for 100 will likely look for around 5. A 4.5 may suit many programmes but fall short at highly selective ones.

What the New Pattern Means for Your University and Visa Plans

This is where most TOEFL pattern guides stop. It is also where most student mistakes happen.

Converting University Requirements to the New Scale

Many universities still publish TOEFL requirements on the old 0-120 scale. Some now list two sets of rules: one for tests taken before 21 January 2026 and one for tests taken after. The University of Stirling in Scotland is one example.

Before you book, save a screenshot of each university's English requirement page. Note whether it mentions the 1-6 scale. If it doesn't, email the admissions office and ask which score they will assess. This simple step can prevent a rejected application.

Is the New TOEFL Accepted for Student Visas?

University admission and visa rules are two separate checks. Here is the picture for popular destinations, based on official guidance.

CountryWhat to KnowOfficial Source
USAThe visa itself has no fixed English test. Your university sets the TOEFL requirement for admission.US Department of State, ETS
UKTOEFL iBT is not on the Home Office SELT list. Universities that sponsor degree-level students can assess your English themselves, but below-degree courses usually need an SELT such as IELTS for UKVI.GOV.UK approved English tests list [VERIFY on publishing day]
CanadaIRCC does not set one fixed test for study permits. Your institution sets the requirement. The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024.IRCC
AustraliaTOEFL iBT is an accepted test for the Subclass 500 student visa. Check the current score equivalents for 1-6 results.Department of Home Affairs [VERIFY 1-6 listing]
Ireland, GermanyUniversities set English requirements, and most accept TOEFL iBT. Check each programme page.University admissions pages

Our advice: If the UK is on your list, confirm with each university before you book TOEFL. You may need a different test for the visa.

Are TOEFL Scores Taken Before 21 January 2026 Still Valid?

Yes. TOEFL scores stay valid for two years from the test date, whether you took the old or new version. A score from March 2025 stays valid until March 2027.

If you plan a 2027 intake and your score expires before your visa application, plan a retest in good time.

Why Students Lose Marks Preparing With Old Material

Picture a typical case. A student in Pune buys a well-known TOEFL book in late 2025. She spends six weeks mastering integrated speaking tasks. On test day, she meets "Listen and Repeat" and "Take an Interview" for the first time. Her Speaking score lands a full band below her mock tests.

This pattern is common in the first year of any test change.

5 Signs Your TOEFL Prep Material Is Outdated

  1. 1.It lists a section score out of 30. The new test scores each section from 1 to 6.
  2. 2.It teaches integrated speaking or Integrated Writing tasks. These were removed.
  3. 3.It says the test takes about 3 hours. Testing time is now about 90 minutes.
  4. 4.It never mentions adaptive testing. The current test adapts to your level.
  5. 5.It has no "Complete the Words" or "Write an Email" practice. Both are core 2026 tasks.

If your book or course fails two or more of these checks, switch to the free official ETS practice material first.

TOEFL vs IELTS vs PTE in 2026: Which Should You Take?

The new TOEFL is shorter and more practical than before. That makes it more attractive for many students. But the right test still depends on your country list.

Choose TOEFL if you are applying mainly to US universities, you type well, and you are comfortable speaking into a microphone.

Look at IELTS or PTE first if the UK is on your list, and your course may need an SELT for the visa.

Talk to a counsellor if your list mixes the UK with other countries. Taking the wrong test can mean paying for two.

How to Prepare for the New TOEFL Pattern

Section-Wise Strategy for an Adaptive Test

  • Reading: Build vocabulary daily. "Complete the Words" rewards knowing exact word forms, not just meanings.
  • Listening: Practise with short audio. Announcements and quick replies reward fast, focused listening.
  • Writing: Write one email and one discussion post every day for two weeks. Time yourself.
  • Speaking: Record yourself answering interview questions. Repeat sentences from podcasts to improve rhythm.
  • Every section: Don't rush the opening questions. The adaptive design uses your early answers.

Official Practice Resources

Start with official material from ETS. It is the only source guaranteed to match the current format. Then add third-party mocks only if they clearly say "updated for 21 January 2026" and match the task names in this guide.

Budget note: The TOEFL fee in India is listed at ₹15,729 on the ETS India site. Extra score reports and rescheduling cost more. See our TOEFL exam fee guide for the full checkout breakdown.

The New TOEFL Explained for Parents

If your child is taking the TOEFL, here is what you need to know.

The test changed in January 2026. It is now shorter, at about two hours, including instructions. It adjusts its difficulty to your child's level. Scores now run from 1 to 6. A 4 means good upper-intermediate English. A 5 means advanced English, which many top universities look for.

Before you pay for coaching, ask one question: "Is your material updated for the January 2026 TOEFL?" If the answer is unclear, ask to see a sample. Look for task names like "Write an Email" and "Take an Interview."

Finally, check that the TOEFL works for every country on your child's list. For the UK in particular, a different test may be needed for the visa.

Final Recommendation

The TOEFL exam pattern 2026 is shorter, adaptive, and scored on a new 1-6 scale. Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking all have new task types, and the old integrated tasks are gone. The new scale maps cleanly to CEFR, and ETS reports a comparable 0-120 score during the transition. The biggest risk for Indian students is not the test itself. It is preparing for the wrong version of it, or booking it for a country where it doesn't meet visa rules.

Before you book, do three things. Confirm the TOEFL requirement at every university on your list, including section minimums. Check visa rules for each country, especially the UK. Then prepare only with material updated for the January 2026 format, starting with ETS's free practice tests.

From 21 January 2026, the TOEFL has four adaptive sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The testing time is about 90 minutes, and ETS advises allowing about 2 hours. Each section and the overall score use a 1-6 scale aligned with the CEFR.

Not necessarily. It is shorter, and the tasks are more practical. But it adapts to your level, so strong students will face harder questions. The new task types also need specific practice. Students who prepare with the right material often find it more manageable.

It can be. A 4.5 sits between CEFR B2 and C1. ETS suggests that universities that used to ask for 100 out of 120 will likely look for about 5. Check your target university's requirements and any minimum section scores.

Yes. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from your test date. Scores from the old format remain valid for the full two years.

No marks are deducted for wrong answers. Answer every question, but in the adaptive sections, take care with early questions rather than guessing quickly.
