Required

Pick the one printed on your marksheet.

Step 2

Choose the grading scale first

Important: GPA conversion methods may vary between universities and institutions. This is an estimated conversion based on the selected method. Always check the official grading or conversion policy of the institution you are applying to.

How this estimate is calculated

This calculator applies a standard linear conversion: your CGPA is scaled proportionally onto a 4.0 scale. It is the method most commonly used for a quick reference figure in study-abroad planning. Actual GPA evaluation may vary by university, country, grading system, transcript, credential evaluator or institution-specific conversion policy. For an official application, always follow the conversion method specified by your university or credential evaluator.

01

Pick your grading scale

Your marksheet header states the scale. Most Indian universities print a 10-point CGPA; some use a 5-point or 4-point scale.

02

Enter the CGPA

Use the cumulative figure from your final transcript. Use the GPA to CGPA calculator if you want to work backwards from a 4.0 GPA.

03

Read the result

You get the estimated GPA and the scale it is based on, so you can reference it anywhere.

Common CGPA to GPA conversions

Values below use the 10-point to 4.0-scale linear estimate (CGPA × 0.4). Use them as a reference point, not as an official conversion.

How to convert CGPA to GPA

For a standard 10-point to 4-point linear estimate, multiply your CGPA by 4 and divide by 10. Multiplying by 0.4 gives the same answer.

Worked example

If your CGPA is 8.5: 8.5 × 4 ÷ 10 = 3.4. Your estimated GPA is 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

This is a standard linear estimate, not a universal official conversion. Many universities recalculate international transcripts using their own policy, and the figure they arrive at can be higher or lower than this estimate.

The formula

GPA = CGPA × 4 ÷ 10

GPA = CGPA × 0.4

Other scales

On a 5-point scale: GPA = CGPA × 4 ÷ 5. If your institution already reports on a 4-point scale, no conversion is needed.

CGPA and GPA, explained

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It summarises your performance across all completed semesters into a single number. Most Indian universities report CGPA on a 10-point scale, though some use 5-point or 4-point scales. It is usually printed on your transcript or consolidated marksheet.

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. In the United States and several other systems it is commonly reported on a 4.0 scale, where each course grade carries a grade point and courses are weighted by credits. A 4.0 is the top of that scale.

Is CGPA × 0.4 an official GPA conversion?

No. It is a simple mathematical estimate.

A linear multiplier assumes that every point of your CGPA maps evenly onto the 4.0 scale. Admissions offices and credential evaluators rarely work that way. They read your transcript, look at individual course grades and credits, and apply their own grading policy for the country and institution your degree comes from.

Why your assessed GPA may differ

  • Your university's own grading scale
  • Grade distribution within your cohort
  • Credits attached to each course
  • Individual course grades, not just the average
  • What your transcript states and how it is formatted
  • Country-specific evaluation practice
  • A credential evaluator's methodology, if one is used
  • The target university's stated admissions policy

Your university may use a different conversion method

Before you put a GPA figure on an application, check four things: your university's application instructions, what your transcript actually reports, the target university's admissions requirements, and the credential evaluator's methodology if the application asks for an evaluation.

The most frequently searched conversions on a 10-point scale, with what each figure typically means for an application.

7 CGPA to GPA2.8

7 × 0.4 = 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. This sits in the range many universities treat as a standard pass for postgraduate entry, so read the programme's stated minimum carefully and be ready to strengthen the rest of your profile.

7.5 CGPA to GPA3.0

7.5 × 0.4 = 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. A 3.0 estimate meets the minimum stated by a large number of master's programmes, though competitive courses often look for more.

8 CGPA to GPA3.2

8 × 0.4 = 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. This is a common profile for Indian applicants and is comfortably above the stated minimum for many programmes.

8.5 CGPA to GPA3.4

8.5 × 0.4 = 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. At this level scholarship consideration becomes more realistic at many institutions, depending on the course and funding available.

9 CGPA to GPA3.6

9 × 0.4 = 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. A strong academic record by most standards, useful for selective programmes and merit funding.

9.5 CGPA to GPA3.8

9.5 × 0.4 = 3.8 on a 4.0 scale. Near the top of the scale. Applications at this level are usually decided on research fit, tests and documentation rather than grades alone.

10 CGPA to GPA4.0

10 × 0.4 = 4.0, the maximum on the scale. A perfect 10-point CGPA maps to the top of a 4.0 scale under the linear estimate, but universities will still read your transcript in full.

Why students convert CGPA to GPA for study abroad

Reading application requirements

Programme pages often state a minimum in GPA terms. A quick estimate tells you whether you are in range before you spend time on the application.

Master's and MBA applications

Shortlisting a set of universities is easier when you can compare your record against each programme's academic expectations on the same scale.

Scholarships

Merit scholarships frequently publish GPA thresholds. An estimate helps you decide which awards are worth applying for.

Credential evaluation

Some applications ask for an evaluation of your degree by a third party. Knowing your approximate standing helps you interpret the report you receive.

Not every university asks you to convert your CGPA yourself. Many accept your transcript as issued and carry out their own assessment. Requirements vary, so check what each application actually asks for.

CGPA to GPA by study destination

CGPA to GPA for USA

Many US institutions report grades on a 4.0 scale, which is why the 4.0 estimate is a useful reference. International transcripts are often evaluated separately, either by the university's own admissions team or by a credential evaluation service, so the GPA on file may not match a linear conversion.

CGPA to GPA for Canada

Canadian universities and provinces use a range of grading systems, including percentage, letter grade and 4.0 or 4.3 scales. Admissions requirements are set institution by institution, so check the specific programme page rather than assuming one national standard.

CGPA to GPA for UK

UK universities generally work with degree classifications such as first class or upper second class, and often state entry requirements for Indian applicants as a CGPA or percentage band. A 4.0-scale figure is usually not what a UK application asks for.

CGPA to GPA for Australia

Australian institutions use their own grading bands and some assess international qualifications against country-specific entry tables. Several publish the CGPA they expect from Indian degrees directly, which is more reliable than a converted GPA.

If you are still studying, your latest SGPA shows how your most recent semester went, while your CGPA is the figure applications usually ask for.
