How to calculate SGPA from CGPA
CGPA is the average of your semester SGPAs, so you can't get one SGPA back from a CGPA alone. You also need the SGPAs of the other semesters. Multiply the CGPA by the number of semesters it covers, then subtract the SGPAs you already know.
Worked example
Your CGPA after 4 semesters is 8.5, and you know the first three SGPAs:
| Semester | SGPA |
|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.2 |
| Semester 2 | 8.6 |
| Semester 3 | 8.4 |
| Semester 4 | ? |
8.5 × 4 − (8.2 + 8.6 + 8.4) = 34.0 − 25.2
8.80 Semester 4 SGPA / 10
The two formulas
Find a semester's SGPA
SGPAₙ = CGPA × N − (SGPA₁ + … + SGPAₙ₋₁)
SGPA needed for a target CGPA
SGPA = (Target × total semesters − Current CGPA × semesters done) ÷ semesters left
Both assume every semester counts equally. Universities that weight semesters by credits can give a slightly different figure.
SGPA vs CGPA: what's the difference?
SGPA
Semester Grade Point Average
Measures academic performance for one semester, calculated from the grade points and credits of that semester's courses.
CGPA
Cumulative Grade Point Average
Represents cumulative performance across all completed semesters, and is the figure most universities and employers ask for.
Going from SGPA to CGPA is a simple average. Going the other way needs the other semesters too. Need the forward direction? Use the SGPA to CGPA calculator.
What SGPA do you need for your target?
Say your CGPA is 7.5 after 4 of 8 semesters on a 10-point scale. This is the average SGPA you would need in each of the last 4 semesters.
| Target CGPA | SGPA needed each semester | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 CGPA | 7.50 | Keep your current pace |
| 8.0 CGPA | 8.50 | One point above your current average |
| 8.5 CGPA | 9.50 | Needs consistently top semesters |
| 9.0 CGPA | 10.50 | Not reachable: the highest possible is 8.75 |
Does CGPA matter for studying abroad?
It is one input among several. Universities abroad typically review your academic performance alongside your degree, individual course grades, the specific programme's requirements, the country's rules, your previous qualifications and, where relevant, work experience. Planning your remaining semesters early gives you more room to meet a programme's cut-off.
Aliff counsellors read these requirements programme by programme. Start with universities, browse programmes, or compare study destinations.
CGPA for Master's applications
Most master's programmes state a minimum academic threshold, often expressed as a percentage, a GPA band or a class of degree. Your CGPA is usually mapped to that scale by the university.
CGPA for MBA applications
MBA admissions weigh work experience, essays, references and test scores alongside academics, so a moderate CGPA can be offset by a strong professional profile.
CGPA and scholarships
Merit scholarships frequently set an academic cut-off. Knowing your CGPA early helps you shortlist awards you are actually eligible to apply for.
CGPA and university eligibility
Eligibility is set per programme and per country. Two universities can read the same CGPA differently, so always check the programme page.
Is the calculation the same for every university?
No. Some institutions average semester SGPAs, others weight them by credits or apply their own rounding rules, so a semester's official SGPA can differ slightly from this estimate.
Use this calculator to understand and plan your grades, and quote the SGPA and CGPA on your marksheet for official documents.

Not on its own. CGPA is the average of your semester SGPAs, so many different SGPA combinations give the same CGPA. To find one semester's SGPA you also need the SGPAs of the other semesters, which is what this calculator asks for.
Multiply your CGPA by the number of semesters it covers, then subtract the SGPAs of the other semesters. What's left is the SGPA of the missing semester.
Missing SGPA = CGPA × N − (sum of the other N − 1 SGPAs). For a target: required SGPA = (target CGPA × total semesters − current CGPA × semesters completed) ÷ semesters left.
Choose "SGPA needed for a target CGPA" above and enter your current CGPA, semesters completed, target CGPA and semesters left. The calculator shows the average SGPA you need in each remaining semester.
It means even the maximum SGPA in every remaining semester would not lift your CGPA to the target. The calculator shows the highest CGPA you can still reach, so you can set a realistic goal.
