How the CGPA to percentage conversion works

CGPA conversion is a formula, not an estimate. Indian universities on a 10-point scale multiply the cumulative grade point average by 9.5, the multiplier set by CBSE and adopted widely across affiliated universities. A 5-point scale is multiplied by 20, and a 4-point GPA is divided by 4 and read as a share of 100. Some universities publish their own formula, so the number on your conversion certificate is the one an admission office will accept.

01

Pick your grading scale

Your marksheet header states the scale. Most Indian universities print a 10-point CGPA; a few autonomous institutes and universities abroad use 4-point or 5-point.

02

Enter the CGPA

Use the cumulative figure from your final transcript, not a single semester's SGPA, unless an application specifically asks for the semester score.

03

Read the result

You get the percentage and the grade class it falls into, so you can reference it on any application form.

University-wise CGPA to percentage formulas

Where a university publishes its own conversion, that formula overrides the standard multiplier. Verify against your marksheet or conversion certificate before submitting an application.

Where you will need the percentage

Transcripts print a CGPA, but the systems that read your application often work in percentages. Knowing both numbers saves a round of corrections later.

University applications abroad

Portals in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia ask for an aggregate percentage to screen eligibility before an assessor reads your transcript.

Student visa documentation

Visa forms and credential evaluations expect one consistent figure across your SOP, resume and academic record.

Scholarships and merit cut-offs

Most scholarship boards set flat percentage thresholds, so a CGPA has to be converted before you can check whether you qualify.

Jobs and PG admissions in India

Campus placement filters, PG portals and government recruitment forms are built around percentage eligibility, not grade points.

On a 10-point scale, multiply your CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.2 equals 77.9%. On a 5-point scale multiply by 20, and on a 4-point scale divide by 4 and multiply by 100.

No. CBSE and most 10-point universities use a 9.5 multiplier, but several universities publish their own formula, such as (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 or 7.1 x CGPA + 11. Check the reverse of your marksheet or your university's conversion certificate.

Most universities abroad read the CGPA printed on your official transcript, but application portals and visa forms often ask for an equivalent percentage, so it is useful to know both figures before you apply.

An aggregate of 70% and above, roughly 7.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale, keeps most universities open. Highly competitive programmes in the UK, USA and Canada usually look for 80% and above.

Yes. Divide your percentage by 9.5 for a 10-point scale. A percentage of 76 works out to a CGPA of 8.0.
