How to calculate CGPA from SGPA
Add the SGPA of every completed semester and divide the total by the number of semesters. If your institution weights semesters by credits, multiply each SGPA by that semester's credits before dividing by the total credits.
Worked example
If your semester SGPAs are 8.2, 8.6, 8.4 and 8.8:
| Semester | SGPA |
|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.2 |
| Semester 2 | 8.6 |
| Semester 3 | 8.4 |
| Semester 4 | 8.8 |
(8.2 + 8.6 + 8.4 + 8.8) ÷ 4
8.50 estimated CGPA / 10
The two formulas
Simple average
CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ N
Credit-weighted
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
The actual institutional calculation may use credits, so the two results can differ when semesters carry unequal credit loads.
SGPA vs CGPA: what's the difference?
SGPA
Semester Grade Point Average
Measures academic performance for one semester, calculated from the grade points and credits of that semester's courses.
CGPA
Cumulative Grade Point Average
Represents cumulative academic performance across multiple semesters, and is the figure most universities and employers ask for.
Simple average vs credit-weighted CGPA
Simple average
Useful when each semester is treated equally, which is common when every semester carries a similar credit load.
Credit-weighted calculation
Useful when the institution calculates cumulative performance using credits, so heavier semesters count for more.
Check your university's academic regulations or marksheet guidelines if you are unsure which method applies.
Common SGPA to CGPA questions
CGPA depends on every semester SGPA you have earned, so an average of 8 across your semesters produces a CGPA near 8 only when those semesters are close to each other. Uneven semesters move the result.
| If your semesters average | Simple-average CGPA | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 7.0 SGPA | 7.00 | Only if every semester sits at 7.0 |
| 7.5 SGPA | 7.50 | A weaker semester pulls this down |
| 8.0 SGPA | 8.00 | Not a universal rule, enter your real values |
| 8.5 SGPA | 8.50 | Credit weighting can shift the decimal |
| 9.0 SGPA | 9.00 | Check your marksheet's own CGPA line |
| 9.5 SGPA | 9.50 | Rounding rules vary by institution |
Does CGPA matter for studying abroad?
It is one input among several. Universities abroad typically review your academic performance alongside your degree, individual course grades, the specific programme's requirements, the country's rules, your previous qualifications and, where relevant, work experience. A CGPA on its own does not decide an admission.
Aliff counsellors read these requirements programme by programme. Start with universities, browse programmes, or compare study destinations.
CGPA for Master's applications
Most master's programmes state a minimum academic threshold, often expressed as a percentage, a GPA band or a class of degree. Your CGPA is usually mapped to that scale by the university.
CGPA for MBA applications
MBA admissions weigh work experience, essays, references and test scores alongside academics, so a moderate CGPA can be offset by a strong professional profile.
CGPA and scholarships
Merit scholarships frequently set an academic cut-off. Knowing your CGPA early helps you shortlist awards you are actually eligible to apply for.
CGPA and university eligibility
Eligibility is set per programme and per country. Two universities can read the same CGPA differently, so always check the programme page.
Is SGPA to CGPA conversion the same for every university?
No. Different institutions may use different methods to calculate cumulative academic performance. Some use semester averages, others use credit-weighted calculations or institution-specific academic rules, including their own rounding conventions.
Use this calculator as a convenient reference, and check your institution's official calculation method when you submit academic documents.
