Step 1

Select the CGPA scale you want *

Required

The scale your converted CGPA should be expressed on.

Step 2

Choose the grading scale first

Important: CGPA conversion methods may vary between universities and institutions. This is an estimated conversion based on the selected method. Always check the official grading or conversion policy of the institution you are applying to.

How this estimate is calculated

This calculator applies a standard linear conversion: your GPA is scaled proportionally onto the CGPA scale you choose. It is the method most commonly used for a quick reference figure. Actual CGPA evaluation may vary by institution, country, grading system, transcript or evaluator-specific conversion policy. For an official application, always follow the conversion method specified by the institution requesting it.

01

Pick the target CGPA scale

Most Indian institutions use a 10-point CGPA scale; some use a 5-point or 4-point scale. Pick the one the application asks for.

02

Enter the GPA

Use the figure from your transcript, reported on a 4.0 scale. Need the reverse? Use the CGPA to GPA calculator instead.

03

Read the result

You get the estimated CGPA and the scale it is based on, so you can reference it anywhere.

Common GPA to CGPA conversions

Values below use the 4.0-scale to 10-point linear estimate (GPA × 2.5). Use them as a reference point, not as an official conversion.

How to convert GPA to CGPA

For a standard 4.0-scale to 10-point linear estimate, multiply your GPA by 10 and divide by 4. Multiplying by 2.5 gives the same answer.

Worked example

If your GPA is 3.4: 3.4 × 10 ÷ 4 = 8.5. Your estimated CGPA is 8.5 on a 10-point scale.

This is a standard linear estimate, not a universal official conversion. Institutions that ask for a CGPA figure from a GPA-based transcript may apply their own policy, and the figure they arrive at can be higher or lower than this estimate.

The formula

CGPA = GPA × 10 ÷ 4

CGPA = GPA × 2.5

Other scales

For a 5-point CGPA scale: CGPA = GPA × 5 ÷ 4. If the institution already reports on a 4-point scale, no conversion is needed.

GPA and CGPA, explained

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. In the United States and several other systems it is commonly reported on a 4.0 scale, where each course grade carries a grade point and courses are weighted by credits. A 4.0 is the top of that scale.

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It summarises performance across all completed semesters into a single number. Most Indian universities report CGPA on a 10-point scale, though some use 5-point or 4-point scales.

Is GPA × 2.5 an official CGPA conversion?

No. It is a simple mathematical estimate.

A linear multiplier assumes that every point of your GPA maps evenly onto the 10-point scale. Institutions asking for a CGPA figure from a GPA-based transcript rarely work that way — they read your transcript, look at individual course grades and credits, and apply their own evaluation policy.

Why an official assessment may differ

  • The institution's own grading scale and evaluation policy
  • Grade distribution within your cohort or course
  • Credits attached to each course
  • Individual course grades, not just the average
  • What your transcript states and how it is formatted
  • Country-specific evaluation practice

The institution may use a different conversion method

Before you put a CGPA figure on an application, check what the form actually asks for, what your transcript reports, and whether the institution publishes its own conversion method for GPA-based transcripts.

Convert your GPA to CGPA

The most frequently searched conversions on a 4.0 scale, with what each figure typically means once expressed as a CGPA.

2.8 GPA to CGPA7.0

2.8 × 10 ÷ 4 = 7.0 on a 10-point scale. This sits in the range many Indian institutions describe as first class.

3.0 GPA to CGPA7.5

3.0 × 10 ÷ 4 = 7.5 on a 10-point scale. A 3.0 GPA is the minimum many master's programmes state, which maps to a solid first-class CGPA.

3.2 GPA to CGPA8.0

3.2 × 10 ÷ 4 = 8.0 on a 10-point scale. A common benchmark figure once reversed back to the 10-point scale.

3.4 GPA to CGPA8.5

3.4 × 10 ÷ 4 = 8.5 on a 10-point scale, often described as first class with distinction.

3.6 GPA to CGPA9.0

3.6 × 10 ÷ 4 = 9.0 on a 10-point scale, in the distinction range for most Indian institutions.

3.8 GPA to CGPA9.5

3.8 × 10 ÷ 4 = 9.5 on a 10-point scale, near the top of the scale under the linear estimate.

4.0 GPA to CGPA10.0

4.0 × 10 ÷ 4 = 10.0, the maximum on a 10-point scale. A perfect 4.0 GPA maps to the top of the 10-point scale under the linear estimate.

Who typically converts GPA to CGPA

Returning to study in India

Students with a transcript from a US curriculum, international school or foreign university sometimes need an approximate CGPA to compare against Indian institutions' eligibility criteria.

Double-checking a reported figure

If you already converted a CGPA to GPA for an application, reversing it is a quick way to confirm the two figures still match.

Comparing profiles against peers

If your academic record is already in GPA form, converting it to the familiar 10-point CGPA scale makes it easier to compare against India-focused eligibility criteria and peer benchmarks.

Filling an India-specific application form

Some Indian institutions, scholarship forms or job applications ask specifically for a CGPA figure, even from candidates whose transcript reports a GPA.

Not every form that mentions a grade asks for a conversion — many accept your transcript as issued. Check what the specific application or form actually requires before converting.
